Kitchen of Friendship is a humanitarian initiative created within the framework of the international Ukrainian-Kazakh charitable project “Yurt of Invincibility.” The initiative aims to support residents of Ukraine’s frontline and border regions by providing warm meals, humanitarian assistance, and a symbol of solidarity between the peoples of Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
The idea behind the Kitchen of Friendship is simple yet powerful — bringing people together through shared meals and acts of kindness. Volunteers and representatives of the Kazakh diaspora prepare traditional Kazakh dishes, primarily Kazakh plov, and distribute them to local residents, volunteers, and people affected by the war.
This initiative is part of the broader humanitarian project “Yurt of Invincibility,” which was created to support Ukrainians during the difficult winter period and the energy crisis caused by the war. The yurts installed in various Ukrainian cities have become spaces of warmth, support, and community where people can warm up, charge their devices, access the internet, and receive hot food.
Within the Kitchen of Friendship initiative, mobile kitchens and volunteer teams travel to different regions of Ukraine. During these humanitarian missions, thousands of portions of hot meals are prepared and distributed to civilians, volunteers, and military personnel.
A key aspect of the project is its cultural dimension. In Central Asian traditions, hospitality and sharing food are powerful symbols of friendship, respect, and unity. For this reason, plov, one of the most traditional dishes of the region, has become the symbolic meal of the initiative.
The project also strengthens humanitarian and cultural ties between Ukraine and Kazakhstan. The two countries share important historical and cultural connections. One of the most significant links is the legacy of Taras Shevchenko, the great Ukrainian poet who spent part of his exile in Kazakhstan. Today, monuments to Shevchenko stand in Kazakhstan, and streets, museums, and memorial sites bear his name.
Kitchen of Friendship demonstrates how humanitarian initiatives can combine practical help with cultural dialogue and international solidarity. Through the simple yet meaningful act of preparing food, volunteers express support for Ukrainians and remind the world that even in the most difficult times, human compassion and cooperation remain the strongest values.
